Microscope in a biology lab

Researchers need to complete the Research Regulatory Review to ensure all appropriate overview committees are aware of and have conducted a proper review of research projects before they begin.  The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs can also provide information on requirements.

NIH-funded investigators and staff involved in clinical trials must complete training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the principles of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).

Wake Forest University requires Responsible Conduct of Research training for all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers paid by NSF grants.

Principal Investigators should complete the Research Safety Checklist with individuals, staff or student, who will be working in the lab.

Laboratory Safety

Faculty and Researchers are responsible for laboratory safety.

Faculty and Researchers who supervise undergraduate students, graduate students, and/or research staff are responsible for ensuring:

  • All personnel in the lab work in a safe manner that minimizes hazard exposure.
  • Personnel working within the lab are aware of all potential hazards in the lab and have completed the required training.
  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and PPE training has been provided for all personnel working within the lab.
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory-specific hazards have been developed, reviewed, and updated.  Lab personnel must know where to access SOPs.
  • Compliance with the OSHA Lab Standard within the laboratory.
  • Accidents, injuries, and illnesses are reported immediately to the Department Chair.

All students and staff working in the lab are to complete the Research Laboratory Training Checklist with the Faculty Researcher prior to beginning work.
