Bloodborne Pathogen Cleanup Procedure

For WFU staff, please adhere to the following procedure in any clean up that carries a risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure.

Inside a Building
For any custodial clean up issue inside a building or within approximately 10 feet of a building:

  • Refer to Custodial On Call Schedule (found in Google Drive) and the Custodial Coverage Calendar (found on Google Calendar).
  • Dispatch or call in appropriate person with a work order.

Outside a Building
For any custodial clean up issue further than 10 feet from a building custodial team limit:

IF: Anyone from the Waste Team is on campus
THEN: Dispatch Waste Team member with a work order.

IF: Anyone from any Maintenance or Utility Team is on campus
THEN: Dispatch Maintenance or Utility Team member with a work order.

IF: Area is isolated and has been marked and barricaded off, and immediate cleanup is not needed
THEN: Send work order to “Waste Team” and they can clean the area the next day. (Waste Team is on campus 7 days a week.)

IF: Two operators are in the plant
THEN: Dispatch an operator with a work order.

IF: No one on campus is available to respond
THEN: Call “ON CALL Maintenance”

Examples of clean up further than 10 feet from the building custodial team limit include:

  • Broken Glass
  • Vomit, blood, feces
  • Dead animal

General Reminders:

For excessive body fluids covering more than 4 feet by 4 feet in area, contact Environmental Health and Safety.

  • EHS will handles the clean up via a contractor once on site
  • If campus police has declared the area a crime scene, contact EHS.

A little spray and a bucket of water will take care of most of these issues. Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
